Armor was nerfed in this pack, so surviving heavy hits requires layers: Armor, Armor Toughness, Resistance, and Protection enchantments each reduce damage at a different stage.

Armor and Toughness

Armor points reduce incoming physical damage, but strong individual hits partially punch through armor. Armor Toughness slows that punch-through, making it most noticeable against bosses and other large attacks.

For Java 1.12-style calculations, the armor reduction uses the smaller of:

20 armor points
armor - incoming damage / (2 + toughness / 4)

That value is then divided by 25 to obtain the reduction fraction.

Example: 20 damage

A player with 20 Armor and 0 Toughness uses an effective armor value of 10, reducing the hit by about 40% before other defenses. With 8 Toughness, the effective value becomes 15, reducing it by about 60%. Pack nerfs may lower the final values, but the relationship remains: Toughness protects armor from collapsing under big hits.

Resistance

Resistance applies a percentage reduction by effect level in vanilla-style mechanics. Because this pack may rebalance it, treat the displayed effect and testing dummy results as authoritative. Resistance is valuable because it layers with armor rather than adding more armor points.

Protection enchantments

Protection contributes enchantment protection after armor. Specialized types—such as Blast, Fire, or Projectile Protection where available—apply to narrower damage categories. Enchantment caps and disabled enchantments are pack-controlled.

Practical conclusions

  • Against many small hits, raw Armor is efficient.
  • Against bosses, prioritize Toughness and Resistance.
  • Protection is a final layer, not a replacement for a good armor set.
  • Environmental, magic, void, or scripted damage may bypass some layers.
  • Test upgrades against the same enemy; tooltip points alone do not show the pack's nerf.
